Management trainee programme:     Empowering employees

Godrej Industries believes that excellence is not produced by machines but by people. The traditional Godrej values today find expression in a management philosophy that is oriented towards ensuring the professional and personal growth of every employee of the company.

Our people are our strengthA set of shared values, management innovations like total quality management (TQM), Kaizen and 360-degree evaluation, and an open appraisal policy are the more prominent features of GIL's management philosophy. The company realises that the fuel for its future growth has to come not just from its board of directors but from employees at all levels. The organisation's framework is designed to quickly and effectively train its people and ultimately empower them to take bold and independent decisions.

Total quality management (TQM): This philosophy has become one of the driving forces at Godrej Industries. TQM helps maximise quality and minimise costs. Total employee involvement, total waste elimination and total quality control are bringing a new work culture to all spheres of activity within the company. More

Kaizen: GIL embraced this Japanese technique of continuous improvement a few years back. Its central theme is that a little action can make a lot of difference in improving an employee's output, in both routine and specific areas of endeavour. The result is a happy organisation empowered to adapt and change for the better.

360-degree evaluation: This unique tool enables a senior employee to get an assessment of himself from superiors, peers, subordinates and himself. A multidimensional system which provides an unbiased feedback to the employee, this method enables him to set his own agenda for self-improvement. Significantly, this is a mechanism used for self-development and not for performance appraisal.

Training: The spotlight turned on continuous training in the Godrej Group almost a decade ago. Over the years our training programmes have been designed, adapted and modified to meet the knowledge and skill requirements of our employees and to keep them abreast of the latest developments in their respective fields. Behavioural and cross-functional training is also a part of how the Godrej Group functions.

International edge: The Godrej Group ensures that its people get exposed to the best international minds. Global infotech consultants Arthur Andersen are in the process of designing and installing a state-of-the-art information technology system and McKinsey is helping some of the group companies formulate long-term strategies. Gallup, the polling specialist, was recently invited to conduct an employee satisfaction survey as well as several customer surveys. This has helped managements within the group better understand the various issues, perceptions and aspirations of its employees.

Opportunities unlimited: Logical extensions, strategic diversifications and continuous growth have resulted in the formation of a number of associate companies under the GIL umbrella. Each is an autonomous unit with the space and freedom to operate, flourish and grow. All of them share common values and draw from a common pool of resources. This unique arrangement offers a multiplicity of opportunity for wider exposure and newer challenges that make the canvas of Godrej Industries larger, richer and more fulfilling for ambitious young people. GIL's businesses were originally part of Godrej Soaps Limited, which also had a consumer products division. That division was de-merged, and Godrej Soaps renamed as Godrej Industries, on April 1, 2001.

GIL employs about 2,000 people and it has four divisions: chemicals, food products, medical diagnostics and real estate.
